Fortea takes over as Gilas Boys sweep Pool C to set up date with China

Terrence Fortea continued where he left off, leading the charge for the Philippines’ quick 21-16 (2:43) win over Turkmenistan to sweep Pool C of the 2019 FIBA 3X3 Under-18 Asia Cup, Friday afternoon in Cyberjaya, Malaysia.

With the sweep of Pool C, Gilas Pilipinas Boys’ 3×3 will face top seed China in the quarterfinals on Saturday, August 24 at 3:40 pm. China was the second-placed team in Pool A.

Making this all possible was Fortea.

Fortea, who had 10 points in the Philippines’ 21-18 (8.6) win over Vietnam, knocked down a deuce to break a 12-all deadlock.

Kevin Quiambao then showed his entire arsenal, firing on all cylinders to give Gilas an 18-12 lead.

Though Hezretaly Ovezov tried to will Turkmenistan back, Fortea was able to seal the win with two free throws with 2:43 to spare.

Fortea had 12 points built on four free throws, three deuces, and two one-pointers while Quiambao and Abadiano had seven and two markers respectively.

Carl Tamayo did not play in the game.

Ysmayyl Arazmammedov and Yevgeniy Nazipov paced Turkmenistan with seven markers each.

The Scores:

Philippines 21 — Fortea 11, Quiambao 8, Abadiano 2.

Turkmenistan 16 — Arazmammedov 7, Nazipov 7, Ovezov 2, Hydyrov 0.
