Filoil: Unblemished La Salle buries Letran with 36-point beat down


De La Salle University ended its elimination with a dominating wire-to-wire 90-54 win over Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the Group B of the FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup, Saturday in San Juan City.

La Salle finished the elimination with a sweep, 7-0, and will face College of St. Benilde in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 5 PM.

La Salle started firing right off the bat, ending the opening quarter with a double-digit lead, 30-15.

The Green Archers did not look back as the lead ballooned by as much as 37 following a Nathan Montecillo layup with 1:13 remaining.

“Well I think Letran didn’t have a full lineup today… so we had the advantage; we took the advantage of it ‘no? We… did like these games, and we just have to rest some of our players, give them sa minutes para at least we did something today. We’ll have the finals game tomorrow sa [PBA D-League],” said La Salle head coach Derrick Pumaren.

“But, nevertheless, this means nothing at all pagkadating sa quarterfinals ‘no? We just have to be ready to play number four [CSB] so we just have to be ready play Benilde on Tuesday. So, we just have to be ready for that. And as I’ve said the 6-0 [record] is nothing if you’re not gonna take care of business on Tuesday against St. Benilde,” he added.

Joaquin Manuel led La Salle in the scoring department finishing with 15 points, a board, and a dime, while Kevin Quiambao had an all-around 11 markers, together with seven rebounds and five assists.

Evan Nelle also had himself a game in his first game against Letran since 2019, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds, and six assists.

For Letran, King Caralipio finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Neil Guarino had a double-double of 10 markers and 10 boards.

Right before the game ended, two Knights were called for unsportsmanlike fouls, with Kyle Tolentino fouling Montecillo at 3:48 before Kint Ariar hitting Raven Cortez with an elbow while contesting a jumper.

Letran ended its preseason campaign with a 3-4 win-loss record.
