FIBA: Gilas Girls U16 crush Maldives with 122-point beatdown

Gilas Women U16 crushed Maldives, 144-22, for its second win in as many outings in Division B of the FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship 2023, Tuesday night at the Prince Hamzah Sport Hall in Amman, Jordan.

The Filipina dribblers wasted no time imposing their might, opening the game with 19 consecutive points that served as an introduction to the masterclass.

Now the leaders of Group A, they could formalize their entry to the knockout crossover Semi-Finals against Jordan on Thursday at 12:30 a.m. (Manila time).

Ten players finished in twin digits in the win where they set the most points by any team in both divisions of this year’s tilt, eclipsing the previous mark set by Australia in its 125-20 win over Thailand in Div. A earlier in the day.

Sophia Canindo spearheaded the romp with a game-high 21 points, alongside four rebounds, six assists, and 12 of the Philippines’ 47 steals. Aubrey Lapasaran and Nevaeh Smith added 16 points each.

Ava Fajardo continued her stellar play with 15 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. The trio of Ryan Nair, Shannon Sayson, and Isabella De Jesus stood out as well, as they all contributed 13 markers apiece.

Alyssia Palma made 11 points. Ariel Star De La O produced a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Scarlett Mercado also chipped in 10 for the crew that garnered a total of 55 rebounds and 40 assists.

On the other hand, Mariyam Kyleen Shiram had 11 points to lead Maldives, who committed a total of 73 turnovers that Gilas turned into 103 points.
