FIBA 3×3: Gilas Women sweep pool play, take Pool C top seed

Gilas Pilipinas Women were clearly superior in the main draw of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2024.

The Philippines easily defeated Mongolia (19-8) and Malaysia (17-10) to sweep Pool C of the continental meet on Friday at the Singapore Sports Hub, OCBC Square.

With a 2-0 record, Gilas Women will enter the knockout quarterfinals as the top seed of the pool. They are set to face Chinese-Taipei, the second-place team in Pool A, on Sunday at 1:10 p.m.

The Filipina quartet has displayed dominance throughout, first in the qualifying draw, where they defeated Tahiti (21-3), Maldives (19-11), and Kazakhstan (21-12) to advance to the main competition.

Against Mongolia, Gilas Women took an early lead of 10-3 and maintained their advantage.

Jhazmin Joson led the Philippine attack against the world No. 19 squad, scoring 11 points, including four deuces.

However, the victory came at a cost as Mikka Cacho injured her right knee during the contest.

Despite the injury, Cacho contributed four points against Malaysia.

Fortunately, the talent of Gilas overwhelmed the Malaysians throughout the game, securing the pool sweep.

Joson once again led the Philippines against Malaysia with six points.

Kaye Pingol amassed nine points in the two games played, while Camille Clarin scored four.

Mongolia also made it out of the group with a 1-1 record, defeating Malaysia earlier in the day, 21-4.
