FEU Tamaraws stump UP for second win

Despite a third set mishap, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws looked dominant en route to a four-set win over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, to stay unblemished in the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Coming off a momentous win over defending champions National University, FEU made quick work of the first two sets, creating chances through solid serving and blocking.

However, UP rallied in the third set and staved off a late FEU run to extend the match.

“Siguro, maganda din talaga ‘yung ginalaw ng UP. Sabi nga naming coaches na walang basta-basta magbibigay sa amin ng panalo dito. Lahat ine-earn,” said FEU head coach Rey Diaz.

Behind bursts from veterans Richard Solis and Rj Paler, FEU surged to a 16-11 gap in the fourth frame and never looked back.

“Kailangan lang na ready talaga kami para sa mga adjustment ng kalaban namin. Kami din kailangan pang mag-improve para sa mga next game,” Diaz thought.

Graduating captain Solis finished with 14 points. Meanwhile, middle blocker JP Bugaoan added 13 markers from 10 attacks and three blocks.

Mark Millete topped the Maroons with 19 points, while Jerry San Pedro managed 13.

Both teams play next on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre. FEU (2-0) take on the Ateneo de Manila University Eagles (1-1) in a rematch of last year’s semifinals. On the other hand, UP (0-2) will try to recover against the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers (1-1).
