EJ Obiena finishes third in Monaco Diamond League Meet

Tokyo Olympics-bound pole vaulter EJ Obiena concluded his run at the 2020 Herculis Diamond League Meet at the Stade Louis II, Fontvielle, Monaco in third place, Saturday morning (Philippine time).

After missing the 5.50-meter mark on his first attempt, the 24-year-old went on to clear the said height, and eventually 5.70, also on his second attempt.

With the height of 5.70, Obiena set his season’s best and finished third.

Ben Broeders of Belgium bagged the second spot after clearing 5.70 on his first attempt.

Both the Filipino and the Belgian tried to clear 5.80, but both failed after taking three turn. That left Sweden’s Armand Duplantis at the top with a clear of the said height.

Duplantis then went on to register a new world-leading height of 6.00 meters, 0.06 higher than his previous mark and just 0.02 off the meet record of 6.02 meters of Poland’s Piotr Lisek.

Last August 3, Obiena finished second and bagged the silver medal behind reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil at the 13th Triveneto International Meeting in Trieste, Italy.
