EJ Obiena finishes fifth in first tournament of 2021


EJ Obiena began the final stretch of his preparation for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Friday evening (Manila time). 

The 6-foot-2 Filipino pole vaulter finished fifth in the 2021 Wettkampfliste Fur Das Indoor Meeting in Germany.

Obiena, 25, completed his first three leaps with ease. It were set at 5.32, 5.47, and 5.62, in that order.

However, Obiena could not complete the 5.72, finishing in fifth.

Winning the tournament is France’s Renauld Lavillenie after clearing 5.95.

Completing the podium are Americans Matt Ludwig and Cole Walsh.

Obiena will continue to train in Europe heading into the Olympiad.
