Dubai: Blatche turns back the hand of time, carries SGA to QF

Andray Blatche, the seasoned hero from Gilas Pilipinas, played a pivotal role in Strong Group Athletics’ 104-95 conquest over Homenetmen in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship on Monday morning at Al Nasr.

The 37-year-old big man turned back the hands of time, using his old post moves to execute silky-smooth jump shots.

In the end, he contributed 15 of his 18 points in the fourth-quarter, all from downtown.

In a closely contested match, Homenetmen led at the 7:07 mark of the fourth quarter, 77-76.

Then Blatche’s remarkable three-point barrage sparked a pivotal 16-5 run, propelling SGA to a comfortable 92-83 advantage with 3:23 left on the clock.

Reigning UAAP MVP Kevin Quiambao sealed the deal with a three-pointer at the 1:20 mark, securing a 99-91 lead.

With the win, SGA has punched their ticket to the quarterfinals.

Dwight Howard also displayed his prowess with a Dubai tournament-best 32-point masterclass on a near-perfect 12-of-13 shooting. He also picked up seven rebounds and five blocks. Quiambao added 19 points on a 7-of-12 shooting performance.

Despite being 38 years old, the eight-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year showcased multiple dunks and short hook shots against younger opponents.

On the opposing side, Zach Lofton, the former import of Meralco, delivered an impressive performance with a game-high 37 points on a 12-of-26 shooting display. He also had eight boards and seven assists.

The team now enjoys a well-deserved break before facing Beirut Sports Club, Lebanon’s other representative, on Wednesday at 1:15 AM.
