Despite specks of green and blue, Lasallians, Ateneans heed call to wear pink

The SM Mall of Asia Arena turned pink on Tuesday.

With the presidents of both Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University encouraging their supporters and alumni to wear pink, the majority of the 11,214 fans that watched their UAAP Season 84 second encounter did so.

The game, which was sold out, had thousands of fans clad in pink with only a few wearing either blue or green.

Yesterday, La Salle’s Bro. Bernie Oca, FSC and Ateneo’s Fr. Bobby Yap, SJ made a joint statement, calling for those watching the game to wear pink.

Though the majority of their supporters supported the move, there were some who questioned it, wondering why mix politics with sports.

This is just the third time in the past 13 years wherein both age-old rivals rallied their fans to shed their school colors.

Back on October 3, 2016, the two schools urged their alumni to wear black as a stand against the extrajudicial killings taking place under the Rodrigo Duterte administration.

Also on August 9, 2009, both Ateneo and La Salle encouraged their supporters to wear yellow to pay tribute to Pres. Cory Aquino.

On Tuesday, University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas also called on their supporters to wear pink in every game.
