Canino, Laput, Provido opt out of Alas duties ahead of Women’s Cup

De La Salle University’s Angel Canino, Shevana Laput, and Amie Provido have all begged off from Alas Pilipinas duties, adding to the growing list of players who have opted to skip the upcoming 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup.

Canino announced the development through an Instagram story on Friday evening.

“To be invited to the National Team training pool is a privilege I never take for granted, and playing for the Philippine flag is the highest honor,” the Lady Spikers star said.

The 22-year-old outside hitter, who has been a mainstay of the national team over the past two years, said the demands of their recent title run in the UAAP Season 88 Women’s Volleyball Tournament were a major factor in their decision.

Canino said all three players will prioritize physical recovery in the meantime.

“However, coming off the high intensity of UAAP Season 88, Amie, Shevana, and I have decided to prioritize our physical recovery. We first need to let our bodies heal and reset so that we can give our best to the game,” she said.

Canino added that they have already informed the Philippine National Volleyball Federation of their decision.

“We’ve communicated this to the PNVF and while we won’t be on the court this time, our hearts are with the team as they compete in the AVC Women’s Cup.”

The absence of Canino and Provido meant that no player from the Alas Pilipinas team that competed in the recent Southeast Asian Games will see action in the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup, which is set to begin on June 6 in Candon.

Other players such as Jia De Guzman, Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, Maddie Madayag, Shaina Nitura, to name a few, have already declined their respective invitations.

The Alas Pilipinas pool, in total, is now down to 11 players, with Strong Group Athletics (SGA) already making its players from Farm Fresh, ZUS Coffee, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, College of Saint Benilde, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran available for national team duties.
