Camille Clarin stuns Netherlands, puts Gilas Girls’ 3×3 on brink of playoffs

Up against sixth-seed Netherlands, Gilas Girls’ 3×3 did not back down.

Camille Clarin was in the right place and at the right time for the Philippines, scoring a buzzer-beater to stun the Netherlands, 10-9, Wednesday afternoon in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The 5-foot-10 Filipino-Canadian followed up her own miss with a putback as time expired in a massive upset.

Clarin had three points in the contest.

With the win, the Philippines will enter their final game in Pool C of the 2019 FIBA 3X3 Under-18 World Cup at second place with a 2-1 record. Only the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout quarterfinals.

Down 3-1 early, pint-sized guard Ella Fajardo torched the Dutch, scoring three of the Philippines’ next four points.

Jamy de Kock and Alissa van der Plas would answer right back but Ann Pingol would tie things up once again with 3:09 left.

A miss by Clarin inside was gobbled up by Pingol that led to a Fajardo deuce. Fajardo though fouled Johanna Bastiaansen that sent the Philippines’ to the penalty.

Bastiaansen only made one of her free throws but was able to make up for it with a deuce to give the Netherlands a 9-8 edge with 58 ticks remaining.

Needing one stop, the Philippines were able to force a shotclock violation that led to a Fajardo free throw with 29.9 seconds left for a 9-9 tie.

After forcing a jump ball in the next possession, Clarin made sure to end the contest right then and there.

Fajardo had six points for the Philippines.

De Kock, Bastiaansen, and Alissa van der Plas all had three points for the Netherlands.
