Defending champion Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire and Akari are set for a high-stakes collision in the 2026 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, a matchup that carries far more weight than just another regular-season game.
In many ways, it is a rematch wrapped in a new jersey—bringing unfinished business back into the spotlight.
The Valkyries, coming off a bounce-back win against RK Hoops-Quezon City to improve to 2-1, enter the 6 p.m. contest at the Filoil EcoOil Centre still carrying the confidence and battle-tested chemistry that powered their title run last season.
Their championship campaign was defined by resilience and poise in tight games, with reigning MVP Afril Bernardino, Khate Castillo, and Snow Peñaranda emerging as steady leaders on both ends of the floor—roles they continue to embrace this season.
On the other side, the Sparks arrive with a reshaped identity after acquiring the core of Discovery, the same squad Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire defeated in last season’s Finals.
Valkyries head coach Cholo Villanueva believes that while their fiercest rival may now wear different colors, the challenge they present remains fundamentally the same.
“Our next game will be Akari. It will be a rematch of the Finals from Season 1, and they’re still the same team, maybe even more talented now. So we’ll be preparing properly for that game because they are a strong contender for the championship this season,” said Villanueva.
Akari, meanwhile, leans on a veteran-laden core headlined by Allana Lim, Raiza Palmera-Dy, and Mar Prado. The trio is expected to anchor both ends of the floor as the Sparks look to match Batangas-New Zealand Bluefire’s intensity and experience while also keeping their 2-0 slate intact early in the season, backed by Aktive.
Meanwhile, the surging Biñan-Tatak Gel (3-0) will look to extend its unbeaten start against struggling Caloocan (0-3) to open the double-header.
Eka Soriano, Chack Cabinbin, and Luisa San Juan will try to keep the Angels firmly atop the standings as they aim to sustain their strong start and further separate themselves from the pack.
On the other end, Janine Pontejos, Sofia Felisarta, and Joan Camagong will look to spark the Lady Kankaloo’s breakthrough as they continue their search for a first win.
