Batang Gilas beats Lebanon, salvages fifth


Batang Gilas concluded its 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship campaign with a fifth-place finish after outlasting Lebanon 89-74 Saturday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Philippines played catch-up for most of the first quarter before a Kris Pagsanjan three gave Batang Gilas a 17-14 margin.

A 10-4 run to open the second quarter, with Juan Gerardo Gomez de Liano accounting for five markers, pushed the cushion to 27-18. The Philippines poured 33 points in the second period alone to make it a sizeable 50-34 lead heading into intermission.

From there, the nationals were able to maintain the margin and hold on for the win.

Jonas Tibayan led five players in double-digits for the Philippines with 16 points on 7-for-11 field goal shooting. Pagsanjan and SJ Belangel added 13 points apiece.

Batang Gilas had a 54-40 edge in rebounding and assisted 27 of 31 field goal makes with Belangel and Gian Mamuyac combining for 15 dimes.

The Philippines won despite shooting only 26.4 percent from the three-point area and giving away 34 free throws to Lebanon.
