The appointment of Patrick “Pató” Gregorio marks more than just a breath of fresh air for Philippine sports, according to Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.
“Our gratitude to our beloved President [Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.],” Tolentino said on Sunday, a day after news of Gregorio’s appointment spread like wildfire.
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the development to Malacañang reporters on Saturday.
“The POC and PSC can now move forward — a brighter sports community that works harmoniously,” Tolentino added.
“Mabuhay ang sports ng Pilipinas!”
Gregorio replaces Richard Bachmann as chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), becoming the third to hold the post under President Marcos Jr.’s administration.
The first was former Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Noli Eala.
Gregorio is now the 13th chairman of the PSC, which was established in 1990 under Republic Act No. 6847.
Tolentino and Gregorio share a long history in Philippine sports.
Tolentino’s involvement spans chess, shooting, muay thai, and cycling before becoming POC president. Meanwhile, Gregorio’s sports journey includes basketball, boxing, and more recently, rowing, where he currently heads the national federation.
In 2018, Tolentino served as POC chairman while Gregorio was the secretary-general.
Just last year, Tolentino appointed Gregorio as the Games-time Chef de Mission for the Paris Olympics after Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, the original appointee, was recalled to address urgent matters in the country.
Most recently, in April, Tolentino — also the president of PhilCycling — and Gregorio, chairman of DuckWorld PH, teamed up for the successful “Great Revival” of the Tour of Luzon.
“Finally, unity,” Tolentino said.
