Angge Poyos may have led the Most Valuable Player race after the first round of the UAAP Season 88 collegiate women’s volleyball tournament, but she is eager for more.
The third-year outside spiker knows that for University of Santo Tomas to make a mark this year, she needs to do even more in the second round.
The Golden Tigresses had a shaky first round, finishing with a 4-3 record.
“Siguro yung pagmaintain lang kung ano yung naging performance ko nung first round and sa second round, siguro mas lamangan ko pa,” said Poyos on what she needs to do.
“Mag-contribute pa nang marami lalo sa scoring department kasi isa rin ako sa mga inaasahan ng team, so need ko talagang mag-step up every game.”
Poyos accumulated 156.22 statistical points (SP) after seven games, putting her on top of the MVP race with a 9.322-point lead over the closest pursuer, Shaina Nitura (147.200 SP) of Adamson University.
In her rookie year back in Season 86, Poyos was the MVP runner-up to Bella Belen and settled for the Rookie of the Year award.
Value to the team is factored into the UAAP MVP computation, with players receiving a win bonus. That’s why UST getting its groove late is crucial to Poyos’ MVP campaign.
After a 2-3 start, the Golden Tigresses have now won three straight games, including their second-round opener against the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday, 21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-12.
“Siguro isa rin pong factor na umaangat din po yung laro namin kasi nagpe-perform hindi lang po ako kundi yung team, so talagang collective effort ito, lalo na sa second round na need talaga naming mag-step up, hindi lang yung mga wing, yung mga middle or setter, so need talagang collective effort,” said Poyos.
UST will next face De La Salle University on Wednesday. The Lady Spikers swept them in the first round.
