All eyes on Abando, Ildefonso as Strong Group gears up for Dubai Championship

Seven players from Strong Group’s William Jones Cup-winning roster will return for the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship, set to take place from January 24 to February 2, 2025.

Headlining the returning players are Rhenz Abando and Dave Ildefonso, who will now take on leadership roles for the team.

“With Kevin Quiambao, JD Cagulangan, and Jordan Heading now in the pros, much is expected from Rhenz and Dave,” said head coach Charles Tiu. “They’ve both proven themselves on big stages before, but this tournament will be a test of their ability to lead and deliver under pressure.”

Also returning are Angelo Kouame and Andray Blatche.

Blatche, now 38, feels determined to bounce back after a lackluster showing last year.

His previous campaign ended prematurely due to an injury he sustained during the finals against Al-Riyadi, where Strong Group settled for second place.

“He’s come in better shape for sure. He wants to come back with a vengeance, and he looked much better today,” said Tiu after Strong Group’s first practice on Friday at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong. “Let’s see how he progresses.”

Rounding out the list of returnees are NCAA MVP Allen Liwag, Tony Ynot, and Justine Sanchez, standout players from St. Benilde.

“It’s great to have guys stay with the program,” added Tiu. “We also have a few new recruits coming in, so the competition for spots will be tough this season. I hope the finals experience last year made them hungrier.

“We’re aiming for growth similar to what Mapúa achieved. But maturity takes time, so it’s too early to tell.”

The returning players will join key additions Demarcus Cousins and Jason Brickman, further bolstering Strong Group’s chances in the prestigious tournament.
