Alex Eala sweeps double duty to reach WTA 125 Gaudalajara semis

Alex Eala overcame a rain delay, clawed back from the brink of defeat in the longest match of her career, and returned to the court just minutes later to notch another victory—booking a spot in the semifinals of the WTA 125 Guadalajara Open in Mexico.

The 19-year-old Filipina endured a grueling second-round duel before finally dispatching 39-year-old Uzbek-American Varvara Lepchenko, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), 6-3, in a match that began Thursday morning and stretched into Friday due to weather interruptions.

Barely catching her breath, Eala then returned to action and swiftly handled Italy’s Nicole Fossa Huergo, 7-6 (2), 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Against Lepchenko—a crafty veteran who made her Grand Slam debut at the 2006 US Open, when Eala was only one year old—the second-seeded Eala showed remarkable grit and composure.

She raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set and later held three set points at 5-3, only for Lepchenko, a former world No. 19, to rally back and steal the set in a tiebreak, 7-3.

Eala nearly bowed out in straight sets, trailing 0-30 while serving at 5-6 in the second.

But she dug deep, forced a tiebreak, and dominated it, 7-3, to level the match.

The deciding set stayed tight early, with both players holding serve through the first five games.

Just as Eala threatened to pull away at 3-2, rain halted play. The delay, however, did little to shake her rhythm.

Upon resumption, she stayed steady and eventually sealed the marathon win after three hours and 10 minutes at Court 1 of the Panamerican Tennis Center.

After a short rest, Eala returned to the same court to face 30-year-old Fossa Huergo, who had built momentum with convincing wins earlier in the week—including a straight-sets rout of Mexican prospect Natalia Sousa Salazar and a gritty comeback against Poland’s world No. 112 Katarzyna Kawa.

The Italian even led 5-3 in the opening set against Eala, but the Filipina fought back, snatched the set in a tiebreak, and never looked back.

She ran away with the second set, closing out the world No. 280 in just eight games.

With the back-to-back triumphs, Eala advances to the semifinals of a WTA Challenger for only the second time in her career.

he is set to face former world No. 84 Kayla Day of the United States for a spot in the final.
