Alex Eala scores impressive win in WTA 250 debut

After a long break, Alex Eala is back in action, and it was a huge return to the court.

The Filipino tennis ace impressed in her WTA 250 debut after a rousing victory against Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea, 7-5, 6-2, in the Round of 32 of the women’s singles event of the Cluj-Napoca Winners Open în Romania, Tuesday.

The result was a huge one, with the 28-year-old Argentinian is currently ranking 209th in the world in the WTA rankings. Meanwhile, the much younger Eala is at present in 639th.

Eala had to fight hard to clinch the final game on a service break, before eventually ending the match after an hour and 35 minutes.

The 16-year-old Filipino needed to shake off rust as she suffered a huge 0-4 hole early in the match. However, when she regained her bearings and set it back on serve, there was no turning back. She held serve and broke the Ormaechea serve to pocket the set advantage.

Eala then zoomed into the lead at 3-1 after getting yet another service break in the lengthy fourth game. That eventually made the difference, as the momentum swung her way en route to the set and the match.

Eala will face Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the next round of the competition.
