Alex Eala will look to turn her clay-court fortunes around against a seasoned opponent who thrives on the surface.
The world No. 42 has drawn world No. 45 Magdalena Fręch of Poland in the opening round of the 2026 Italian Open, also known as the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, at the Foro Italico in Rome on Tuesday (Manila time).
The 28-year-old Fręch is the second-highest ranked Polish player in women’s tennis, behind world No. 3 Iga Świątek.
She reached a career-high ranking of No. 24 in 2024, the same year she made her best Grand Slam run by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Fręch also captured her maiden WTA title that year at the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open in Mexico.
Known for her aggressive playing style, Fręch relies on powerful groundstrokes and strong tactical awareness.
Her solid baseline game makes her particularly dangerous on clay, where she can either extend rallies or go for precise winners.
Eala will need to maintain a high first-serve percentage, as Fręch is effective at punishing second serves.
The 20-year-old Eala will also carry added motivation heading into the match.
A win would set up a potential second-round rematch with world No. 33 Wang Xinyu of China, who denied her a place in the WTA 250 ASB Classic final last January after a three-set semifinal victory.
World No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan could await in the third round for either Wang or the winner of Eala and Fręch.
After a strong start to the first quarter of the season that saw her climb to a career-high ranking of No. 29, Eala has struggled to find consistency on clay, going 2–3 across her last three tournaments.
