Alex Eala bows to Czech teen Valentova in Japan Women’s Open opener

It was a tough day at the office for Alex Eala.

The 20-year-old Filipina struggled to find her rhythm and fell in straight sets to Czech teen phenom Tereza Valentova, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round of the WTA Japan Women’s Open on Tuesday at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka.

Eala entered the match hoping to bounce back from an early exit in the qualifying round of the WTA 500 Wuhan Open in China.

However, she was unable to capitalize on several opportunities to shift the momentum, eventually bowing out after two hours and twenty-seven minutes of play — despite the match lasting only two sets.

Valentova, just 18 years old, has been on a breakout run this season.

She has already captured two WTA 125 titles and reached the second round of both the French Open and the US Open.

Her impressive form has propelled her world ranking from No. 241 at the start of the year to No. 78.

The Czech rising star immediately asserted control, breaking Eala twice early in the first set to build a 4-1 advantage.

Although Eala managed to hold serve in the fifth game, Valentova’s precision and power proved too much to handle as she closed out the set after 40 minutes.

It was a similar story in the second frame, with Valentova racing to a 3-0 lead.

Eala tried to mount a response, but the Czech remained in command, dictating rallies and maintaining her aggressive tempo to seal the victory after eight games.

Valentova’s dominance was underscored by her efficiency on return, breaking Eala’s serve six times while surrendering her own just once — a rare feat against one of the tour’s most consistent returners.

Despite the setback, the world No. 54 Eala will look to regroup as she returns to China for the Guangzhou Open, a WTA 250 event set from October 20 to 26 at the Nansha International Tennis Center.

She is slated to enter the tournament as the fifth seed.
