Alcantara, Cea, Delo fall in Asiad taekwondo

After securing the country’s first medal, taekwondo experienced significant setbacks for the third consecutive day at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Arven Alcantara advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating a highly-regarded Thai opponent in the Round-of-16 of the men’s -68-kilogram division. However, he suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mohammed Mustafa of Jordan.

Both Laila Delo and Dave Cea also faced defeats, with the latter losing to Iran’s Mehran Barkhordari in the men’s -80kg division quarterfinals. Delo, on the other hand, was defeated by Vietnam’s Thi Khiem in the women’s -67kg class.

Korean Open gold medalist Kirstie Elaine Alora (competing in the women’s +67kg class) and four-time SEAG champion Samuel Morrison are now tasked with securing the country’s first gold medal in the continental showpiece.

King Patrick Perez secured the men’s individual bronze on Sunday.
