Roger Pogoy braces for high expectations after winning ROY crown

For Roger Pogoy, Friday night was a culmination of one of his dreams. He never really thought of it happening once in his life, but as soon as he was named the 2017 PBA Rookie of the Year, it was, indeed, a dream that came true.

“Wala sa isip ko [‘to] noon. Parang dream lang,” said the 24-year-old, who was even underdressed for the event as he was just wearing a collared shirt and jeans — proof that he never truly expected that he’ll win.

For the Far Eastern University standout, winning the award wasn’t just a case of having more than enough luck. Being named as the best newbie in the league is a result of the hardwork he puts in in each and every given time.

“Resulta ‘to ng hardwork ko kasi every ensayo, before and after, nage-extra ako,” said the Gilas Pilipinas stalwart, who edged fellow national team players Matthew Wright, Jio Jalalon, and Kevin Ferrer en route to the prize.

The Cebuano cager was understandably elated with this huge achievement of his. However, Pogoy does not forget that his honeymoon phase in the pro ranks is now over and that he will head into his sophomore year with high expectations.

“Pagbubutihan ko pa. Kung pwede i-times two yung performance, i-times two ko [for next season],” Pogoy declared.

“Marami pang kulang. Kasi yung Rookie of the Year, bonus lang yan. Ang importante talaga is mag-champion.”
