Megabuilders comes of age, hands Cignal first loss

Youth triumphed over experience

The Megabuilders Volley Bolts, a team composed of student-athletes from National University, maintained its perfect record after handing the Cignal HD Spikers its first loss in a surprising sweep, 26-24, 26-24, 25-17, Wednesday afternoon in the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Cignal suffered its first loss in the Open Conference.

“Slowly but surely nagmamature na sila. Yun naman hinahanap namin sa kanila eh, focus from the first point hanggang matapos ang laro,” coach Dong Dela Cruz commended.

The NU-powered unit pulled off two razor thin wins in the first two sets.

The two teams were just exchanging leads and breaking deadlocks in the first two sets that both featured a deuce. National team player Bryan Bagunas’ momentum was unstoppable as he dominated in the third set while the defense limited Cignal to only 17 points.

Bagunas scored 17 points while Ismail Fauzil and Kim Malabunga created 12 points each.

The Volley Bolts will face Sta. Elena on July 22 without Bagunas due to national team duties.

“Sta. Elena ang sunod tapos wala si Bryan. Marami naman kaming ipapalit. Maraming magstestep up at gagawa ng puntos para sa amin,” the Megabuilders mentor assured.

Mark Alfafara paced Cignal with 11 markers.
