Cignal takes character-building win against Generika-Ayala

The Cignal HD Spikers were able to outwit the Generika-Ayala Lifesavers late to take a 26-24, 23-25, 26-24, 25-14, win for their third win of the tournament, Thursday evening at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Jovelyn Gonzaga paced Cignal with 13 markers, 12 coming from kills, while Royse Tubino added 12 point.

And the HD Spikers needed to dig deep to eke out the first and third sets, while the Lifesavers picked up the second — with all set wins coming by margins of just two points.

“Malalaki yung Generika kaya nahirapan kami ma-penetrate yung play namin. Sabi ko nga, yung middle namin mag step-in siya para madali na lang sa opposite namin,” Cignal head coach George Pascua said.

Rachel Daquis and Cherry Vivas scored 10 points each, as well.

But the grueling first three sets took their toll on the young Lifesavers, while Cignal’s experience showed in the third. A 6-0 lead opened the fourth set, paving the way for an easy 25-14 win, with Janine Marciano scoring the match point.

“Dun mo kasi ma-tetest kung gaano sila katibay. Dun mo makikita kung sino yung pangdikdikan talaga,” Pascua said about this kind of win.

Gen Casugod and Fiola Ceballos led Generika-Ayala with 12 points each.

Cignal (3-1) will face the Cocolife Asset Managers (1-3) on Saturday, March 18, at the Muntinlupa Center Sports Complex at 7:00pm. Generika-Ayala (1-2) will face the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors on the same day at 5:00pm.
