La Salle escapes gutsy Adamson to secure seventh victory

The De La Salle University Lady Archers started the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Basketball Tournament second round in fine fashion with a 76-74 win over the Adamson University Lady Falcons.

Lady Archers captain Camille Claro led the Green and White with 26 points. Claro was followed by Khate Castillo with 14 points, and Snow Peñaranda who produced 13 points and 17 rebounds, today at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

“Again we weren’t consistent for the whole 40 minutes,” commented La Salle mentor Cholo Villanueva after the game. “We had a big lead, but we lost our focus again. The good thing about this game is that we held our composure down the stretch.”

The Taft squad led the first three quarters 58-56. It was in the fourth period when the Lady Falcons threatened to make a comeback. Nathalia Prado gave Adamson a 62-64 lead past the 8:00 mark.

From that moment, the Lady Archers enacted a 7-0 run capped off by Peñaranda to give the advantage back to La Salle at 73-66.

However, Adamson didn’t back down, as baskets from Prado, Kaye Pingol, and Jamie Alcoy made it 74-75 with just 13.7 seconds left in the game.

Castillo was then fouled, but she only converted one free throw to make it 76-74.

With 11.8 seconds remaining in the game, Alcoy was given ball and she attempted a shot from three-point range which fizzled out and La Salle hung on to win 76-74 at Adamson’s expense.

Villanueva explained, “We got the shots that we wanted. We had the stops in important moments. We want to average between 14 to 15 turnovers per game. The good thing about is that we had 15 turnovers in the first half and we just committed 5 in the second half.”

It was three point shooting that won the Lady Archers this game. La Salle outgunned Adamson from beyond the arc, with 37.50 percent compared to the latter’s 29.41 percent.
