The worst has just happened to the College of Saint Benilde Blazers.
The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas mauled the Blazers, Thursday afternoon, in a 70-45 whitewashing to send CSB to their worst start in school history.
The Saint Benilde Blazers have lost 14 straight games, carrying over from last season. CSB’s last win came against the EAC Generals last September 4, 2015.
Moreover, the 45 point output by the Blazers is this season’s low.
Bright Akhuetie led the Perpetual attack with 15 points. Fellow foreign-student athlete Prince Eze notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with a couple of swats.
“Siyempre galing sa talo kaya kelangan gawin ang lahat ng tama at yun yung lumabas,” Perpetual coach Jimwell Gican said after the game. “Gusto ko ibigay yung credit sa mga players dahil nagtiwala sila sa amin na kaya nila gawin iyon.”
The Blazers were able to keep pace with the Altas in the first half, even tying the game at 28-all. However, the Las Piñas squad shackled their Taft counterparts in the third frame, allowing just seven points.
With their confidence down, the Blazers slumped at the start of the final frame. CSB’s porous defense was lambasted by the trio of Eze, AJ Coronel, and Flash Sadiwa. On the other end, the Blazers committed numerous unforced turnovers that led to a game-high 31 point lead, 66-35, with 6:07 left in the game.
“Execution,” Gican remarked about the 19 assists his team had. “Yun ang talagang ginagawa namin at kelangan tapusin ang lahat ng options. We have to execute our ball movement.”
Gab Dagangon added 12 points and six rebounds for Perpetual, while Gerald Dizon dropped his season-high 12 points as well.
“Nung mga nakaraan pangit ang training namin pero ngayon maganda ang nilaro ko sa training,” Dizon said. “Nagbunga lang ang ginawa ko sa practice.”
After shooting 40 percent from the field in the first half, the Blazers shot at a miserable 6-of-29 clip in the second half.
JJ Domingo was the only Blazer in double-figures with 19 points.
The Perpetual Altas (3rd, 9-3) will have a week off before facing rivals Arellano Chiefs on Thursday, September 1 at 2:00pm. Things will not get any easier for the Benilde Blazers (10th, 0-12), facing the Letran Knights on Tuesday, August 30 at 4:00pm.
