Charles Tiu has officially been named head coach of the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters in the PBA, raising questions about his future with College of Saint Benilde.
According to PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, the league does not allow its head coaches to simultaneously hold the same position in another league.
Similarly, the NCAA prohibits its head coaches from leading teams in other leagues.
The NCAA has previously enforced this rule with Jerry Yee of CSB and Sherwin Meneses of Arellano, barring them from coaching their respective PVL teams, ZUS Coffee and Creamline.
Both instead served as “active consultants” to their collegiate squads—a role that Tiu is expected to adopt at Benilde.
“Benilde is my program, my team. I still intend to run the show,” said Tiu.
“The title isn’t important—what matters is that we represent the school well and take care of our players. From day one, my role with Benilde has always been as a consultant.”
Tiu has been at the helm of the Blazers for the past five years, leading them to the NCAA finals in Seasons 98 and 100.
Last season, CSB finished in fourth place.
“The PBA is still the highest level in the country, and it’s truly an honor to be part of it,” added Tiu.
