The UE Red Jins are entering the UAAP season with a line-up that has a good mix of young rookies and experienced veterans. The UP Jins, on the other hand, lost stand-outs Karlo Ngitngit and Armando Lazaro in their line-up. The UE Red Jins defeated a rebuilding UP team 5-2 to open their UAAP campaign.
UAAP Season 76 Junior’s MVP King Philip Pineda started things-off for the Red Jins by outwitting UP’s Rannie Mercado. Mercado scored on 4 body kicks but gave-up 7 kyonggo’s, to give-up 3 points to Pineda. Pineda defeated Mercado 5-4. Flyweight Joenel Rendora dominated Justin Castillo in a 14-2 2nd round point gap win. Jenar Torillos rallied in the 2nd round, converting on 8 points, in a come-from-behind 12-8 win over Josiah Cabanag. Sean Rodriguez tried to rally the Maroon-side back with a 10-3 victory over Frasser Tahil in featherweight action but prized recruit Karlos Gaerlan would not find his footing in his match against Raymond Cano in an 8-4 loss. UE’s final jin John Michael Agno would not compete in his scheduled match-up against Guillano de Dios.
