Caloocan breaks through, snaps skid with win over Pasig in WMPBL

Caloocan finally entered the win column after fending off Pasig, 77-71, to snap a four-game losing streak in the Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) on Wednesday night at the MRB Gymnasium.

The Lady Kankaloo found their opening early in the fourth quarter and never looked back, holding off the Queenpin the rest of the way to improve to 1-4 in the standings.

Clinging to a slim 58-57 lead entering the final period, Sofia Felisarta, Lorraine Capilit, and Janine Pontejos sparked a blistering 8-0 run that gave Caloocan a 66-57 cushion with 7:24 remaining. The Lady Kankaloo then withstood every late Pasig rally down the stretch to secure their breakthrough victory in the tournament supported by Aktive.

“After nung previous losses namin, talagang nagsikap kami mag-training kasi ‘di pwedeng matapos ‘yung first round ng wala kaming nauuwing panalo para sa team Caloocan,” said Caloocan head coach JP Bernal.

“Nagpakundisyon kami, pinag-usapan namin ‘yung mga turnovers namin last game kasi masyadong marami. Naging open kami, lalo ‘yung mga players,” he added.

Felisarta posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Rejoice Adlawan also delivered 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the Lady Kankaloo’s breakthrough win.

Pontejos likewise finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and four assists, while Dianne Pedregosa chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds.

The contest remained tightly contested through the first three quarters before Caloocan created the decisive separation in the fourth behind crucial baskets from Felisarta, Pedregosa, and Pontejos that kept Pasig at bay.
