PBA Pass-Through: Compton on respecting opponents; Slash Brothers’ injuries

March 13, 2016

The Alaska Aces overcame a double-digit deficit and went on to beat Globalport Batang Pier, 103-101, Saturday night at the Cuneta Astrodome.

In the first game, the Star Hotshots ran over Phoenix Fuels for a decisive 91-75 victory. The Hotshots won back-to-back games for the first time under Jason Webb.

Here are updates on last night’s games and more tidbits in this edition of the PBA Pass-Through.

Compton tells team to respect foes

The Alaska Aces barely eked out a win over an undermanned Globalport side, and head coach Alex Compton thought his team had been outplayed for most of the match.

“They were really leading the most of the game. And I felt they outplayed us for the most of the game. I admired how Globalport played. They made shots, they pursued the ball. I thought they out-worked us for most of the game,” Compton said.

“At the end of the game, I thought our defense carried us, but I did not feel it was a 48-minute defensive intensity. I thought we turned it on in spurts, and that bothered me,” he added, citing Globalport head coach Pido Jarencio’s great game plan for the match. “That was a great coaching job for him today.”

The Aces found themselves down by as much as 33-18 before working extremely hard to get back and eventually pull off a win.

“They dominated us in the glass, we were lucky to come away with a win. I thought they outworked us,” Compton added.

“We talked about respect for Jeric (Fortuna), for Jonathan (Uyloan), Joseph (Yeo) who is still capable of (taking over). I just thought our team energy was not where it should be, and again that is human.”

Romeo said he is still experiencing pain on his right calf, and he will most likely miss two weeks to recover. Pringle, meanwhile, is expected to return in Globalport’s next game against Star on Friday next week.

Jonathan Uyloan, Jeric Fortuna, and Paolo Taha stepped up for the Batang Pier, combining for 34 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Update on Baguio, Casio

Another guard, JVee Casio, played only limited minutes as he was nursing an injury on his right knee early in the game against Globalport.

Casio finished with just two points in seven minutes; he did not return in the second half but per Sports5’s Sel Guevara, he will be good to go in the Aces’ next game.
