Cyd Demecillo has been one of the bright spots in the Meralco Power Spikers’ ongoing campaign at the import-laden Philippine Superliga Grand Prix.
Many initially wondered how she would fare in a semi-professional league, having only played in inter-collegiate leagues for the past years. But to everyone’s surprise, she has been thriving in her role and has been a consistent source of offense for the team.
“Expectation ko siguro [is] madaming akong [dapat] matutunan sa league na ito. Kasi siyempre mga kalaban namin may mga imports,” Demecillo told Tiebreaker Times when asked about her goals in playing for the PSL. “Sobrang nakakatuwa na we get a chance to play with them.”
As of press time, Meralco is yet to score a win in the league, but they have shown signs of improvement with each passing game. Opposing teams always have a tough time against Meralco due to their airtight defense and relentless energy. It is only a matter of time before they make it to the win column.
“Iyong experience [playing here in the PSL], parang new adjustments and siyempre parang naguguluhan kami noong first round but naka-adjust na kami,” Demecillo added. “Pero siguro, sobrang motivated pa rin ang team para makakuha ng first win. Nothing to lose lang talaga.”
Moreover, Demecillo admitted the losses they sustained had shaken them badly, but they still made it point to focus at the task at hand. Nothing comes easily in the league and every game she plays gives her valuable experience.
“Well, sino ba naman ang masayang matalo di ba? Siguro nararamdaman namin pero normal lang siguro ‘yung feeling na matalo [tapos] malungkot,” Demecillo remarked. “Pero, after noon, balik na agad at normal na agad.”
With Meralco’s chances of making the semis now gone, Demecillo hopes that all the experiences she had in her short PSL stint will help her at the UAAP volleyball wars next year. It may be just a little thing for her, but this short run has the chance to give her a big boost.
“Oo siyempre surprised [because we had a hard time here] pero bilog talaga ang bola so ganoon talaga,” she ended. “Minsan nasa taas ka, minsan nasa baba ka.”
