With debuting Quentin Millora-Brown and long-time cornerstone June Mar Fajardo leading the way, Gilas Pilipinas Men set a new all-time rebounding record in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Friday evening against Guam.
The Philippines grabbed 61 rebounds at the Calvo Fieldhouse, surpassing the previous record of 59, jointly held by Iran and Lebanon.
Lebanon set the mark during a 96-38 victory over Indonesia on November 26, 2021, while Iran matched it on July 4, 2022, in an 80-68 win over Syria.
Millora-Brown and Fajardo each pulled down 10 rebounds in Gilas’ 87-46 rout of Guam, with AJ Edu contributing eight more.
Dwight Ramos and Scottie Thompson combined for 11 rebounds, and every Gilas player recorded at least one board.
Of the 61 rebounds, 20 came from offensive rebounds, showcasing the team’s dominance in the paint.
For context, the all-time record in the Qualifiers is 63 rebounds, achieved by Congo on June 30, 2018, against Morocco, and later matched by Angola on February 24, 2023, against Uganda.
