Vietnam secures Pool B sweep in AVC Challenge Cup

Defending champion Vietnam completed its sweep of Pool B after taking down Indonesia in four sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-27, 25-13, in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women, Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Vietnamese were left stunned in the third set after the Indonesians survived an extended encounter.

However, the reigning champions pulled away midway into the third set and led by as big as 10 points to complete the win.

Vietnam star Tran Thi Thanh Thuy missed her fourth consecutive game, but the team continued to roll and locked the top seed in the group with a perfect 4-0 standing while officially eliminating Indonesia.

“The coaching staff used a different rotation today. It is to ensure everyone is involved and ensure everyone is ready to go when the time comes,” said Vi Thi Nhu Quynh.

“Before every match, the coaching staff looks at the opposition and has different tactics for each opposition. I’m sure that the coaching staff will do the same thing in scouting the opposition and make sure that we have the best possible formation,” she added.

The world no. 38 squad capitalized on the young Indonesians’ errors as the latter tallied 23 compared to the former’s 12 in the 92-minute contest.

Vietnam will face off against the second-ranked squad in Pool B on Tuesday, 7:00 PM, at the same venue.

Quynh exploded for 26 points – 10 of which came in the first set – on 23 attacks, two blocks, and two aces to lead the Vietnamese.

On the other hand, Indonesia will head to the classification phase after ending the group stage with a 1-3 card.

Junaida Santi paced the Indonesians with 24 points, while Bela Sabrina Agustina delivered 21.

Indonesia will take on the third-seeded team from Pool A in the 5th-8th place match also on Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
