Familiar customer, same result
The Adamson University women’s badminton team has finally done something that they have not accomplished in years: winning two straight ties.
However, with a familiar opponent on the other side in the University of the East Lady Warriors, it was simply inevitable. The Lady Falcons proved their mettle once again, taking down UE, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Graduating senior Mikaela Aquino shared something that might be the biggest reason for this feat. She admitted, “Gusto po talaga namin… ang goal po namin this season is makapasok sa Final Four.”
Showing the same determination towards that aim for the year, Clydel Pada opened the day for the ladies off San Marcelino with a huge 21-12, 21-6 demolition of Erycka Labay in the first singles match. The long-time Lady Falcon was unstoppable on court 1, limiting her opponent to only a few clean hits throughout the match.
Young gun Jhay Anne Macabenta then followed suit with a sweep of Heide Roasl in the second singles match. Swift plays and better court coverage did the trick, as youth toppled experience in the two-game contest at 21-18, 21-13.
It was fitting that the Adamson pillars, seniors Aquino and Pada then wrapped up the tie victory and the back-to-back win. The Lady Falcons made minced meat of the Labay and Pamela Fernandez, and bagged the match and the win in just two games as well, 21-12, 21-9.
UE’s Rosal sisters, Heide and Lyra then showed their chemistry and denied Adamson a sweep, taking down Macabenta and Alyssa San Pedro, 21-13, 21-15. Aquino then made it two-for-two for her in the day, sweeping Lyra Rosal at 21-18, 21-13.
The Lady Falcons (2-1)’s road toward that Final Four target will take an immense boost if they stun last year’s runners-up Ateneo de Manila University (2-0) on Friday, September 29 at 1 pm. On the other hand, the Lady Warriors (0-3) will attempt an even bigger shocker on the same day and time when they face the defending champions University of the Philippines (2-0).
