SSC-R, AU remain unscathed


Last year’s finalists, San Sebastian College Lady Stags, and reigning champions Arellano University Lady Chiefs carved contrasting wins to stay undefeated, in the ongoing National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball eliminations, Friday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

San Sebastian showed signs of fatigue in their third game of the week, but nonetheless, pulled off another win in four sets against a resilient Emilio Aguinaldo College squad. The Lady Stags took the match, 25-13 25-17 21-25 25-8. San Sebastian pounced on the reception problems of the Lady Generals with 13 huge service aces, especially, in the three sets that they have won. EAC stuck with the perennial contenders in the third with improved floor coverage, and eventually snuck a set of the Stags. In the end, the Legarda-based herd sealed their third straight in an emphatic 25-8 set victory.

Soltones once more led the charge for San Sebastian with 27 points, while three players scored 7 markers each to help the team’s captain. The opponent’s skipper, Yvonne Reyes, likewise led the Generals with 7 points.

On the other hand, defending titlists Lady Chiefs breezed past the Lady Pirates in the first two sets, 25-11 25-9, before fending off a third-set uprising, 25-21, to remain unbeaten in two matches. Arellano completely dominated the opponent, doubling the latter’s production on attacks, 36-18, and firing off 9 more service aces. Errors from the Chiefs and resilient effort from the Lady Pirates kept the final set tight. Nonetheless, Arellano closed it out eventually.

Lady Chiefs’ star middle blocker CJ Rosario paced her tribe with 13 markers. Outside hitters Jovielyn Prado and Danna Henson had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Grenlen Malapit had near double-digit effort with 9.
