With the transfer of legendary head coach Tim Cone to the Barangay Ginebra Kings and the promotion of Jason Webb as head coach for the Star Hotshots [Confirmed by Spin.ph: IT’S DONE: SMC big boss Ramon Ang confirms Tim Cone move from Star to Ginebra], who takes who with them? And what exactly happened to Frankie Lim behind the scenes.
What exactly happened to Frankie Lim?
Frankie Lim was appointed the head coach of Barangay Ginebra last March 31, 2015. Lim was the team’s sixth coach in the last five years, third in a span of a year.
Under Lim, Ginebra finished with a 5-6 record. As a team, the Kings averaged 103 points per game while giving up 102.7 points, good for a measly 0.3 differential. The Lim-mentored squad was only able to squeak past to the next round after a Japeth Aguilar game-winning three pointer against the NLEX Road Warriors last June 24, 2015. However, Ginebra was eliminated by the would-be finalists, the Alaska Aces, last June 26, 2015 with a score of 114-108.
This is where it gets tricky. During that quarterfinals game, there was an incident that saw Abueva and import Orlando Johnson getting tied up during the third quarter of the game. Things got heated as Abueva and Lim exchanged words afterwards and the fiery coach “hit” the Aces forward as seen in the video below:
As a result, the PBA Commissioner’s Office punished Lim with a Php 50,000.00 fine plus a one game suspension for next season. According to the our source, this was the last straw for the San Miguel management. Our source added that having a dismal record was “tolerable” but the conduct he displayed was unacceptable. Moreover, the history between Abueva and Lim, that stems from the San Sebastian-San Beda rivalry back in the latter part of the 2000’s, should have been left in the NCAA he added.
This resulted to the dismissal of Frankie Lim as head coach and the carousel that is now happening to the two sister teams/rivals.
Who goes where?
Both Ginebra and Star, arguably, have the most recognizable coaching staff in the league today. Prior to the coaching change, here’s the staff for both teams in the 2015 Governors Cup:
Head Coach: Frankie Lim
Assistant Coaches: Olsen Racela, Freddie Abuda, Kirk Collier, Mark Jomalesa, and Kerby Raymundo
Head Coach: Tim Cone
Assistant Coaches: Richard del Rosario, Johnny Abarrientos, Jason Webb, and Mon Jose
According to a league source, coach Tim Cone will take Richard del Rosario with him to Ginebra. Olsen Racela will remain with the Kings and, as well as, Freddie Abuda. Abuda is the team’s video coordinator. It is still not known if big man coach Kirk Collier will remain with the team.
For Jason Webb, PBA all-time great Johnny Abarrientos will remain with him at Star. Moreover, longtime Tim Cone protege and National University assistant coach Mon Jose also stays with Star.
As of release, the other spots are still being talked about by the management.
