Rivalries rekindled as Fil-Chinese league grows with two new age brackets

Old rivalries will be renewed and familiar bonds rekindled as the Smart Sports Fil-Chinese Athletic Association Inc., presented by Tanduay Athletics, expands its basketball showcase with two new age divisions beginning February 2 at the Tanduay Gym in Quiapo, Manila.

Riding the momentum of a successful inaugural season last year, league chairman Wilbert Loa announced the addition of the 30–39 and 50-and-above divisions in response to strong interest from Fil-Chinese schools eager to relive the excitement, drama, and camaraderie the tournament delivered in its debut.

“They wanted to join and experience the fun—and as the saying goes, the more, the better and merrier. That’s the reason why we are adding two more age categories,” said Loa, who will be joined by Oliver Choa, Arvin Sy, Alvin Teng, Willy Chan, and Edster Sy in steering the league.

Multi-titled mentor Junel Baculi returns as league commissioner for the second straight year, overseeing a tournament designed to revive friendships and rivalries forged during the golden years of Fil-Chinese high school basketball.

Set to compete in the 50-and-above division are Xavier, Chiang Kai Shek College, Grace Christian College, St. Stephen, Philippine Cultural College, St. Jude Catholic School, Hope Christian High School, and Tiong Se Academy.

Fans can expect a faster and more intense brand of basketball in the 30–39 division, where UNO High School joins the race for the coveted crown.

In last year’s 40-and-above division, Hua Siong College of Iloilo—bannered by James Yap and Ken Bono—emerged champion after a classic title showdown against Joseph Yeo- and Chris Tiu-led Xavier. St. Stephen’s Christian Luanzon, however, took home Most Valuable Player honors.

Grace Christian also etched its name in league history by ruling the 45-and-above division with an unblemished run, capping its campaign with a two-game sweep of St. Stephen behind the standout performances of Albert Edsel Chua, Allan Tan, and Cloyd Ong.
