PLDT sweeps Coast Guard to open V-League Reinforced Conference

Despite missing the services of numerous key players, the PLDT Home Ultera Ultra Fast Spikers easily took down the Philippine Coast Guard Lady Dolphins in straight sets on the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference, 25-10, 25-11, 25-20, Sunday afternoon at the San Juan Arena.

The Ultra Fast Spikers dominated the first two sets of action. Janine Marciano and Laurence Latigay provided the offensive firepower for PLDT, while Lizlee Ann Gata-Pantone in the first set, and Ella De Jesus in the second, scoured the perimeter for loose balls, making it difficult for the Lady Dolphins to get their offensive game going.

Coast Guard put up a better fight in the third set, taking a 6-2 advantage over PLDT, who all of a sudden had a difficult time getting their offense going. PLDT had a bit of luck during the following stretch, as the Lady Dolphins coughed up error after error as both teams settled on a tie at 7-all. Both teams traded points until the 14-all mark, where PLDT once again found their offensive groove, pulling away and never looking back. New recruit, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas ended the game, scoring off the block and awarding PLDT their first win of the conference.

PLDT dominated the game offensively and defensively, outscoring Coast Guard 41-18 with their attacks, as well as punching in 8 service aces compared to the Lady Dolphins’ 4. Latigay led the charge, with 11 of her 12 points coming via spikes. PLDT also out-dug their opponents 37-19, and was able to share the ball better, notching 18 excellent sets to Coast Guard’s 6. Jem Ferrer contributed 10 of PLDT’s total excellent sets.

Aside from scoring the winning point, Maizo-Pontillas contributed to the win to the tune of 7 points, good enough for Player of the Game honors.

PLDT’s Head Coach, Roger Gorayeb, was asked after the match if he was aiming for a championship to cement his legacy, sweeping all three Shakey’s V-League conferences.

“Hindi ko nga napansin yun eh, nalaman ko lang nung nabasa ko siya sa Facebook. Hindi ko gustong mag champion para sa sarili ko. Ginagawa ko ito para sa mga players,” he shared.

He also mentioned that Maizo-Pontillas still had a long way to go in getting back into shape, as she started practicing with the team just last week after three months of no training.

PLDT next match will be against the V-League’s new team, Kia, on Sunday October 18, 3pm at the San Juan Arena, while Coast Guard faces Navy on October 17, 12:45 at the same venue.

The scores:

PLDT (3) – Marciano 13, Latigay 12, Maizo-Pontillas 7 Soriano 6, Roces 6, Devanadera 5, De Leon 2, Gata-Pantone (L), De Jesus (L)
