PBA’s Narvasa on women’s league: ‘We will see where it goes’


PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa says the league will assess the 3-on-3 women’s basketball tournament after the first conference of the 41st season to see what future will unfold for women’s hoops in the country.

“The guiding principle behind the 3-on-3 (tournament) is expanding the fanbase. The PBA came up with a team that has done research and found out there is huge interest in women’s basketball,” Narvasa said.

The league opened its doors to women athletes as they brought the PBA women’s 3-on-3 Invitational Tournament as part of the 41st season.

Twelve teams joined and games shall take place during the league’s Wednesday and Friday game dates.

“We’ll see. There is an initiative sa D-League to put up a women’s basketball league kaso hindi naaasikaso. We will see the assessment after the first conference and then see where it goes,” Narvasa added.

“Ang gusto talaga muna is school-based. We will see where it goes. Gusto rin naman natin ng commercial (based) para viable. We will see how it goes muna. Mahirap masabi. The assessment will come.”


The Philippine Basketball Association will open its doors to women athletes as they bring the PBA Women’s 3-on-3 Invitational Tournament in the 41st season.

The tournament shall be open to players aged 18-25 who have played competitive basketball in the amateur or corporate ranks.

Games shall take place during the league’s Wednesday and Friday game dates.

The PBA is looking at a maximum of 8 teams divided into two groups competing in a single-round robin. The top two teams per bracket advance to the crossover semi-finals, followed by a best-of-3 final.

The winner takes home P50,000.
