The longest active winning streak in the NCAA has finally come to an end.
Colegio de San Juan de Letran pulled off a monumental upset on Saturday, sweeping three-time defending champion De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 25-22, 25-23, 26-24, at the Lyceum of the Philippines University Gym in Manila.
The Lady Knights snapped the Lady Blazers’ historic 43-game winning streak, which had stood since January 10, 2020 — exactly 1,874 days ago.
Benilde had not tasted defeat since falling to Perpetual Help in the Season 94 Final Four on January 29, 2019.
The Lady Blazers’ dominant run spanned three full seasons, including their sweep of the Lady Knights in last year’s NCAA Season 99 Finals to clinch a three-peat.
The streak began with a victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University at the start of Season 95.
However, Letran refused to let history dictate the outcome this time around.
“I credit it to the players and sabi ko nga sa kanila, no expectations. We have to learn in this game. Pero, they really want to win. They refused to lose,” said Almadro.
Dominating the first two sets before figuring in a tight decider, Gia Maquilang sealed the deal with a clutch hit, sending the Letran bench into celebration.
Yen Martin spearheaded Letran’s charge with a game-high 19 points, including 17 attacks and a block.
Vanessa Sarie provided stability with 15 points built on 12 attacks and three aces, while also contributing 12 excellent receptions.
Judielle Nitura added 12 points and showcased her defensive prowess with seven digs as the Lady Knights improved to a perfect 3-0 record.
Letran head coach Oliver Almadro praised his players for their relentless effort and determination.
“They really want to win, so who am I as nag-ga-guide sa kanila to prevent it? So, they’re the ones who want it. So, they want it and they asked for it, and then the Lord gave it to them,” the concurrent University of the Philippines volleyball program head explained.
He went on, “Sabi lang namin kanina, let’s just have a joyful heart and offer it to the Lord. Kung anong ibibigay sa amin, we’ll take it. Ang importante may matututunan ka.”
Wielyn Estoque led Benilde with 13 points, while former league MVP Mycah Go was limited to just nine as the Lady Blazers dropped to 3-1.
