the National University Lady Bulldogs used a patented second half surge to claim their fourth straight victory

Once again pitted in a challenge against an eager Adamson University squad, the National University Lady Bulldogs used a patented second half surge to claim their fourth straight victory, 76-62 Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The defending champions were pushed to the limit in a clash of unbeaten teams, yielding to a hole against Lady Falcons early in the first quarter.

Rhea Tacitac scored Adamson’s first three field goals, attacking the paint several times. A trey by Jaime Alcoy plus back to back inside points by Jonalyn Lacson pushed the gap to 13-7.

But National U began to work on defense, forcing turnovers for easy baskets in transition. A 10-0 run gave the Lady Bulldogs their first separation at 17-13.

Later, Jack Danielle Animam pounded the interior with baskets from point-blank while Gemma Miranda added two more in transition as the Sampaloc side made it 33-23 at the half.

In the third period, outside shots by Andrea Tongco and Risa Paig pushed the lead up to 16 at 49-33 before NU’s bigs took charge in the fourth frame to establish an insurmountable 72-48 bubble.

Afril Bernardino and three other players scored 11 points in another balanced effort from the Lady Bulldogs. Rheena Itesi finished with 11 points and 11 boards in her finest game of the season.
