Manila Clasico is arguably one of the greatest rivalries in Philippine sports.
But with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, comes a new version in “Bubble Clasico”.
On Sunday night, one of the most anticipated rivalries that has attracted fans from all walks of life will play with no audience — with the exception of virtual fans.
The storyline will be different this time. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is dominant as ever behind an immaculate 4-0 win-loss card. Meanwhile, archenemies Magnolia Hotshots are struggling at 1-4.
But when it comes to the Clasico, team standings are out of the window.
Speaking in Tiebreaker Vods’ 2OT, presented by SMART Sunday afternoon, Hotshots leader Marc Pingris — who is not in the bubble due to right calf injury — listed the reasons why his team will continue to fight, especially against their rivals in red.
“May gigil kasi every time talaga na Manila Clasico, ito talaga ‘yung pinaka-inaabangan talaga ng team[s],” said Pingris, who is also dealing with chronic foot and ankle injuries.
Pinoy Sakuragi has been the heart and soul of the Magnolia franchise — the most vocal in the locker room; the ears of his teammates when they need a push; the one there to provide guidance for the young guns.
And with Magnolia slumping to three consecutive losses — including the most recent against Phoenix where they blew a 17-point fourth quarter lead — Pingris will be the last one to give up on his squad.
“Habang napipilayan ‘yung team namin, minsan talagang umaangat ‘yun kapag alam na nila solusyonan ‘yung pagkatalo namin. I believe na makakaya nila ito.”
With the roaring Ginebra fans not in attendance in the Bubble Clasico, Pingris believes it will be an advantage for Magnolia.
“May laban siguro kami kasi walang mga fans ngayon eh! Walang magiingay ‘di ba?”
