Luisa San Juan forgoes final years at La Salle to pursue new opportunities

Luisa San Juan is turning the page on her UAAP journey, opting to forgo her remaining years of eligibility with De La Salle University to chase new challenges beyond collegiate basketball.

The 23-year-old sniper, who joined La Salle in 2019, still had two years of eligibility left but has chosen to move forward, setting her sights on the next stage of her career.

“I’ve already graduated and I want to explore different things kasi ever since I came here nung 2019, sa La Salle lang ako eh. So I just want to explore,” San Juan told Tiebreaker Times.

San Juan capped off her UAAP stint with a stellar final season, leading the Lady Archers in scoring with 16.0 points per game, along with 4.36 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 14 outings during UAAP Season 87.

The sweet-shooting small forward, originally from Itchen College in the United Kingdom, made history in her last season by tying the UAAP basketball record for the most three-pointers in a single game — draining 10 against Far Eastern University on September 25.

With that feat, San Juan matched the all-time UAAP record held by National University’s Jeff Napa and set by University of the East legend Allan Caidic.

Her 10 triples also established a new women’s division record, surpassing former La Salle sniper Khate Castillo’s previous mark of eight three-pointers in a game.

A pool member of the Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 team, San Juan expressed deep gratitude for La Salle and the impact the program had on her growth as a player.

“I’m very grateful for my time in La Salle. I learned a lot and ang dami kong memories, ups and downs, lahat doon ko natutunan,” she said.

San Juan is currently showcasing her talents in the 2025 Women’s Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) Invitational Tournament with Cavite-TOL, where she is averaging 15.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 2.0 steals, and 0.8 blocks through five elimination-round games.

She remains focused on refining her game in the WMPBL while considering her next move, including a potential return to England.

“Well, kaka-start lang naman (ng WMPBL), it’s a good start, a great start for women’s basketball. Of course, (to give us) the chance na makapaglaro and ma-show namin ‘yung skills namin,” she said.

“I’m gonna stay here. If mag-continue ‘yung WMPBL, I’ll stay here. If not, sana hindi, I’ll go back to England.”
