CJ Perez could have made an entire country erupt in joy on Wednesday when he had the chance to lift Gilas Pilipinas past Angola in the battle between Group D squads in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Foshan, China.
The Columbian Dyip rookie had the ball in his hands with 5.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Gilas were looking to break the 73-all deadlock and earn its first win in the tilt, following back-to-back lopsided losses to Italy and Serbia, respectively.
But apparently, Perez was unaware of the remaining time.
Perez should have driven aggressively to the rim, as he had during Gilas’ courageous fightback from a 49-61 deficit early in the fourth. Unfortunately, it appeared that he did not see the clock. Perez settled for a heave instead.
The shot missed badly, sending the game into overtime.
The Philippines still fought in the extra period, and even had a three-point lead early. But the Angolans showed why they are among Africa’s elite, displaying immense composure en route to the thrilling 84-81 victory.
For Perez, that missed opportunity late in regulation was due to inexperience.
“It’s my decision. I was supposed to drive that, but lack of experience maybe. I think I should’ve driven that and maybe I can make that shot,” said Perez.
Still, the rookie finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in 28 minutes.
Gilas end the group stages winless in three games, and will head to Beijing for the classification round on Friday against Iran and Tunisia. This particular stage may had been tough, but Perez and Gilas charge it to experience.
“We learned a lot here. It’s a good experience for the team.”
