Defending champion Kurashiki showcased its strength with a commanding victory over the youth-laden EST Cola in four sets, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, to kick off its title-retention bid in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
Malaysian middle blocker Cing Low Mei made a significant impact for the returning Ablaze, scoring 22 points through 19 attacks and two service aces.
This performance extended their winning streak to seven games, following a perfect 6-0 record in the 2023 edition of the tournament.
“I think we can gain more experience because this is our first game in the Philippines. I believe we will perform better in our next game,” said Cing.
Kurashiki initially appeared poised to sweep the match after winning the first two sets. However, EST Cola, represented by Thailand’s U-20 squad, mounted a comeback in the third set.
Sasikan Kanoiu, Sasithorn Jatta, and Natthawan Phattaisong led a late surge, overcoming a 22-all tie to win 25-23.
Kurashiki regrouped swiftly in the fourth set, overcoming the spirited challenge from EST Cola.
“We had some difficulties because they are both tall and skilled,” said Kurashiki head coach Hideo Suzuki.
In addition to Cing’s impressive performance, Yukino Yano – a holdover from last year’s squad – contributed 15 points, including 11 attacks, two kill blocks, and two aces. She also recorded 22 excellent receptions and 11 excellent digs.
Team captain Saya Taniguchi added 14 points, while Saki Tanabe and Mami Gondo both tallied 11 points each. Kyoka Oshima, the reigning Finals MVP of the tournament, provided 26 excellent sets and three points.
Kurashiki will face Farm Fresh tomorrow, Thursday, at 4:00 PM at the same venue.
Meanwhile, EST Cola began the tournament with a 0-1 record.
Warisara Seetaloed led the Thai squad with 14 points and 15 receptions, while Nattharika Wasan added 11 points.
