Ginebra run hot to dispose GlobalPort

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel have finally won at that Smart Araneta Coliseum this season.

Barangay Ginebra defeated the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 85-70, to clinch their fourth win this Smart Bro PBA Philippine Cup.

Barangay Ginebra enjoyed a good start to the game. Mark Caguioa drew first blood, then LA Tenorio made a three to hand Ginebra a 9-3 start over GlobalPort. Caguioa gave Ginebra a ten point lead after a Jay Washington layup, 15-5. Joseph Yeo scored, before Japeth Aguilar extended Ginebra’s edge 19-7. Tenorio then closed the first quarter to give Ginebra a 23-13 cushion.

Debutant Jervy Cruz scored to continue Ginebra’s momentum, 26-15, early in the second quarter. Undeterred, Keith Jensen started GlobalPort’s comeback. Terrence Romeo upped the ante with four straight points and a Stanley Pringle corner three cut Ginebra’s hold on the game to 26-25.

Both teams traded baskets until Pringle gave GlobalPort the lead via four markers. Yeo stretched the lead to 32-38, but Greg Slaughter and Chris Ellis sliced the deficit to two. Washington then gave Globalport a 36-41 lead before halftime.

A Romeo three gifted Globalport their biggest lead at 40-48 in the third quarter, but Ginebra responded via baskets from Caguioa and Tenorio to carve the Batang Pier’s lead down to a single point. Doug Kramer and Rico Maierhoffer later scored to give GlobalPort a four point lead over Ginebra.

However, Ginebra quickly equalized with points from Slaughter and rookie Scottie Thompson. Romeo again scored from beyond the arc to level the scores at 55-55. Joe Devance scored a jumper, and Tenorio’s free throws eventually gave Ginebra a 59-55 edge at the end of a low-scoring third quarter.

Cruz handed Ginebra a four point lead, which was cut to two from a follow up by Washington early in the fourth quarter. Caguioa then extended Ginebra’s edge to 67-61 from a bucket in the paint. Slaughter then took control of the ball game and scored five points, two of which came from a trademark slam. This gave Ginebra a huge 72-61 advantage. Ginebra maintained a big 10 point edge over GlobalPort. Slaughter scored to stretch Ginebra’s dominance to 81-70. Aguilar then slammed the ball home to wrap the game up for Ginebra 85-70.

Caguioa and Slaughter led Ginebra with 22 points, while Tenorio followed with 18. Washington and Pringle scored 18 and 13 markers respectively for GlobalPort.

It was the third straight win for Barangay Ginebra. On the other hand, GlobalPort lost for the third time this season, dropping them to a 3-3 record.

Up next for Ginebra are the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the Smart Araneta Coliseum this Sunday (Novemebr 29, 2015; 5:15PM), while GlobalPort will play Blackwater Elite in the earlier game (3:00PM).
