Galeries Tower promotes Godfrey Okumu to head coach after Lerma Giron exit

Just hours after announcing Lerma Giron’s departure, Galeries Tower promoted assistant coach Godfrey Okumu to head coach on Friday.

Okumu, who last appeared in the Premier Volleyball League in 2019 as head coach of Motolite, will make his debut with the Highrisers in the upcoming Reinforced Conference later this year.

The 57-year-old Kenyan tactician has served as Giron’s assistant since the team joined the league in 2023.

“A familiar face. A trusted leader. Coach Godfrey Okumu returns to guide the Highrisers as Head Coach,” Galeries Tower wrote in a Facebook post.

Okumu inherits a youthful squad full of promise, led by 2025 PVL Rookie Draft second overall pick Jean Asis, sophomore spiker Jewel Encarnacion, and steady veterans France Ronquillo and Ysa Jimenez.

The Highrisers are coming off a disappointing campaign in the PVL On Tour. They finished winless in the preliminaries with a 0-5 record before being eliminated by Chery Tiggo in the knockout round.
