Former world title challenger Farenas makes triumphant return

After two years, Michael Farenas picks up where he left off with another knockout win Friday morning (Philippine time) in Costa Mesa, California, USA.

Farenas last fought in October of 2015, defeating Vachayan Khamon in Paranaque City.

The former WBA world title challenger stopped Mexican Martin Angel Martinez in the third round.

Farenas, who turns 33 this month, weathered an early cut and quickly sent his opponent to the canvas in the opening round before finishing him off in the third.

With the victory, the pugilist from Gubat, Sorsogon improves his record to 42-5-4 and registers his 34th stoppage win.

Farenas’ coach Marvin Somodio expressed satisfaction with his fighter’s performance in his return bout.

“I was expecting that Michael is gonna be tense especially in the early rounds after a long layoff. He rattled after he got cut in the first round but managed to stay calm and focused after we advised him,” Somodio told Tiebreaker Times.

Somodio also expects Farenas to be more active in the coming months to get his feel in the ring faster.

“He just need to be in the ring consistently to keep his momentum. [In addition] he will be better next fight. Michael is an exciting fighter, fun to watch and the killer instinct is there which what we are looking for in every fighter,” Somodio added.
