FEU ends misery, uses second half surge to drub depleted Adamson

Trying to tinker with a disappointing first round record and just trying to salvage pride, Far Eastern University used a second half rally to trounce a depleted Adamson University squad, 48-39 Thursday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The Lady Tamaraws outscored the Lady Falcons 20-8 in the third quarter, running in transition and attacking their counterparts inside.

Ericka Hortaleza and Daphne Payadon combined to score the first 13 points of the Lady Tamaraws in the penultimate period, as the Morayta crew turned an 18-23 deficit into a 31-23 bubble.

Later in the fourth period, a 6-0 run made it a 44-31 margin for FEU although treys by Jamie Alcoy and Jane Ramillano pulled Adamson within 37-44.

But baskets by Clare Castro from point-blank secured the win for the 2-7 Lady Tamaraws.

The Lady Falcons, which dropped to 3-6, did not have the services of premier big Janille De Castro who was serving a one-game suspension.

Without a rim protector for the Lady Falcons, the Lady Tamaraws won the rebounding battle slightly, 46-45 and shot 50 percent from two-point area.

Precious Arellado topscored for FEU with 12 points. She also contributed 6 rebounds and 9 assists. The team assisted 16 of 21 makes, displaying the ball movement they were lacking throughout the first round.

FEU won the game without head coach Bert Flores who was also serving a one-game suspension after being ejected last week.

Alcoy paced the Lady Falcons with 14 points and 5 boards.
