Fajardo, Cayabyab, Clarin, Pingol set to make Gilas Women debuts in Asia Cup


Gilas Pilipinas Women will enter the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna as it preps for two tournaments.

The first tournament Gilas will join is the 2021 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup from September 27 to October 3 in Amman, Jordan.

Following this is the 2021 FIBA 3×3 Under-23 World Cup, which takes place from October 11 to 15 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Twelve players have received invites to the bubble, headlined by young guns Ella Fajardo, Ann Pingol, Kristine Cayabyab, and Camille Clarin.

Fajardo, 18, is a 5-foot-5 floor general who will play for Fairleigh Dickinson.

Clarin, 20, is a 5-foot-10 winger who was the Rookie of the Year for National University during UAAP Season 82.

Cayabyab, 18, is a 5-foot-9 guard-forward, while Pingol is a 19-year-old winger.

Clarin, Cayabyab, and Pingol are going to do double-duty as they will also compete in the 3×3 World Cup. One more player is expected to arrive for the 3×3 team.

Completing the squad are veterans Afril Bernardino, Chack Cabinbin, Khate Castillo, Clare Castro, Ria Nabalan, Janine Pontejos, Mar Prado, and Andrea Tongco.

Composing the coaches and staff are Patrick Aquino, Julie Amos, Ramon Garcia, Ron Gorospe, Rassel Urag, and Leonardo Felisilda.

The team will enter the bubble anytime this week or once they get clearance from the Inter-Agency Task Force.

The Philippines will face China, Chinese-Taipei, India, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand in the Asia Cup.
